EV & Hybrid Car Servicing Explained

Electric and hybrid cars are now a common sight on Irish roads, but many owners are unsure how servicing works for them. Do they still need a service? What gets checked? Is it cheaper? This guide explains how EV and hybrid servicing differs from a traditional petrol or diesel car, and what to expect.

Do EVs and Hybrids Still Need Servicing?

Yes, absolutely. While the drivetrain is different, EVs and hybrids still have brakes, tyres, suspension, steering, cabin filters and safety systems that wear and need regular checks. A common myth is that an electric car is “maintenance free.” It isn’t, but the service is different, and often simpler in some areas.

How EV & Hybrid Servicing Differs

A fully electric car has no engine oil, spark plugs, timing belt or exhaust, so several traditional service items disappear. A hybrid, by contrast, has both an electric motor and a conventional engine, so it still needs oil changes and engine maintenance alongside its electric components.

What Gets Checked on a Hybrid or EV Service

  • Brakes, EVs and hybrids use regenerative braking, so pads can last longer, but they still need inspection (and can seize if underused).
  • Tyres, heavier batteries and instant torque can wear tyres faster, so tread and pressure checks matter. See our new tyres service.
  • High-voltage battery & cooling, checks on the battery’s health and cooling system.
  • 12V battery, even EVs have a conventional 12V battery that can fail. See car battery replacement.
  • Cabin filters, wipers and software, general upkeep and safety items.

How Often and How Much?

Service intervals follow the manufacturer’s schedule, just like any car. EV servicing can work out cheaper over time thanks to fewer wearing parts, while hybrid servicing is broadly similar to a petrol or diesel car because it has both systems. We provide dedicated hybrid car servicing and work with all makes and models, with transparent quotes before any work begins.

FAQ

Hybrids need technicians familiar with high-voltage systems and the right equipment. Our team is experienced with hybrid servicing.

Yes, EVs and hybrids follow the same NCT rules as any other car based on the vehicle’s age.

It’s broadly comparable to a conventional car, as a hybrid has both an engine and electric components. We’ll quote upfront.
