Clutch Replacement Cost in Ireland (2026): What You’ll Actually Pay

A slipping clutch is one of those jobs nobody wants to hear about, mostly because of the bill. The good news is that for most cars on Irish roads it’s a very predictable job, and the clutch replacement cost is driven by a handful of things you can understand before you ring a garage. Here’s what to expect in 2026, what pushes the price up, and how to tell if it’s really the clutch.

Clutch Repair and Replacement Mechanic

The short answer

For a typical family car such as a Focus, a Golf, a Corolla or a Qashqai, a clutch replacement in Ireland in 2026 generally lands between €450 and €800 including parts and labour. Smaller, older cars sit at the lower end. German premium brands, anything with a dual-mass flywheel that also needs replacing, and larger SUVs and vans will run higher, often €900 to €1,500.

Those are market ranges, not a quote. Every car is different, so the honest answer for your car is a quick inspection and a written price before any work starts.

What’s actually in the price

A clutch isn’t one part. The bill is usually made up of:

The clutch kit. Pressure plate, friction plate and release bearing, normally replaced together. Replacing just the worn disc is a false economy because the gearbox has to come out either way.

The flywheel. Many modern diesels and a lot of petrols run a dual-mass flywheel (DMF). If it’s worn, it should be replaced at the same time, because doing it later means paying the labour twice. A DMF typically adds €300 to €500 to the job.

Labour. This is the big one. Getting the gearbox out and back in is anywhere from 4 to 8 hours depending on the car. Front-wheel-drive hatchbacks are quickest. Four-wheel-drive cars and some vans take considerably longer.

Extras. Concentric slave cylinders, gearbox oil, and occasionally a clutch cable or hydraulic line if they’re on their last legs.

ENGINES AND GEARBOXES

Why the same job costs €450 on one car and €1,200 on another

Make and model. Parts for a 2014 Fiesta are cheap and plentiful. Parts for a BMW 3 Series or an Audi A4 are not, and the labour is longer.

Dual-mass flywheel. If your car has one and it’s worn, expect the higher range. If it’s fine, you can often leave it, but ask the garage to check it properly rather than assume.

Where you go. Main dealer labour rates in Dublin are typically €100 to €120 an hour. A good independent garage is lower, uses quality OE-equivalent parts and will usually turn the job around faster.

How long you’ve left it. A clutch that’s been slipping for months can overheat and score the flywheel, turning a clutch job into a clutch-and-flywheel job.

Signs your clutch is going

You don’t need to be a mechanic to spot most of these:

  • Slipping: the engine revs climb but the car doesn’t pick up speed to match, especially in higher gears or going uphill.
  • A high biting point: the clutch only engages right at the top of the pedal travel.
  • A burning smell after heavy traffic or hill starts.
  • Judder when pulling away.
  • A spongy, stiff or noisy pedal, or a squeal or rumble that changes when you press the clutch.
  • Difficulty getting into gear, particularly first and reverse.

Two or more of those together and it’s time to get it looked at. A clutch rarely fails suddenly, it gives you warning, but once it’s slipping badly it can leave you stranded.

Is it worth repairing?

Almost always, yes. A new clutch on a well-maintained car will typically last 80,000 to 150,000 km. If the car is otherwise sound, €600 on a clutch is far cheaper than changing the car. The exception is an older, high-mileage vehicle with other known problems, where it’s worth a frank conversation first. We’ll tell you straight.

How long does it take?

Most clutch replacements are a one-day job. Book it in the morning and in most cases you’ll have the car back the same evening. Vans, 4x4s and anything needing a flywheel may run into a second day.
